Elli Vassalou

Elli Vassalou (Greece, 1983) is a Brussels-based transdisciplinary artist, architect, activist, and researcher. Her work intertwines with the concepts of migration, diaspora, intersectional and decolonial pedagogies; counter-mapping minor narratives on the experience of the public realm, space and collective memory. She designs platforms for co-creation, collective knowledge production and social change. She works hybridly through film, performance, text, archives, spatial design, discursive and multisensorial tools. She is seeking new ways of polyphonic narrating and assembling. Some of the platforms she co-initiated are Surplus Cinema, the Post Collective, the Post (film) Collective, Metacπora, Sasé Istwé, Parallel Perceptions, School of Love and Syntrofi.  She taught at the Open Design Course for refugees and asylum seekers (2016-2019), KASK, Ghent and was the artistic coordinator of Espace Fxmme, Globe Aroma, (2020-2023)  Brussels. She is currently researching the cross-cultural practice of Çiftetelli  (Greeco-Turkish form of belly dance) as a tool for collective healing, feminist placemaking and queer joy.
