Maarten De Vrieze

Trained as an electro-mechanic and autonomous designer, Maarten De Vrieze worked in factories and travelled the world on his bicycle before becoming an artist. He then studied autonomous design at KASK Ghent and collaborated with various artists and collectives such as Cão & Xilogravura, Karl Van Welden, Haider Al Timimi, Simon Allemeersch and LucindaRa. The research he undertakes as an artist, as a living organ, relates to the phenomena of everyday life, as a human being within the bigger frame that shapes society; with artistic gestures, he makes tangible what remains invisible due to dominant forms of power. His work was shown at Vooruit, Kaap, Kaaitheater, the Europalia Art festival, among others; and includes film documentaries, interventions in public space, exhibitions and scenography.
